A guide to superfood coffees

If you were asked to think of a healthy hot drink, your mind would probably think of tea. Much to the delight of coffee lovers (ourselves included) superfood coffees are now seeing a meteoric rise in popularity. So, what are they?

Superfood coffee

Put simply, it is a coffee that contains an ingredient known for its abundance of certain minerals, vitamins and/or antioxidants. Familiar examples include pomegranate, sweet potatoes, and certain nuts or seeds. Other superfoods, such as mushrooms, have slipped under the radar until recently.

Mushroom coffee

We understand that mushrooms in your morning coffee might sound a little bit disconcerting. But in reality, you don’t have to compromise on taste and you get to take advantage of the body boosting benefits that come along with these marvelous mushrooms!

The Lion’s Mane Mushroom Coffee Blend

Never heard of Lion’s Mane? Let us fill you in. What makes Lion’s Mane a superfood is its high antioxidant activity. Without getting too technical, this basically means that it’s good at neutralising unstable molecules that could otherwise harm your body’s cells.

Perhaps even more exciting is that Lion’s Mane encourages the generation of myelin, which protects our nerve fibers. Lion’s Mane may thus contribute to a healthy brain and improve focus and memory retention.

If that's not enough, it’s also pretty nifty when it comes to tackling inflammation. This can also have knock on effects when it comes to tackling the symptoms of depression and anxiety! Our Lion’s Mane blend pairs this superstar ingredient with the sweet and gentle taste of luxury columbian arabica coffee beans. Our other key ingredients are Ashwagandha, cacao and MCT coconut oil.

What is Ashwagandha?

A key ingredient in both our Lion’s Mane blend and our Chaga mushroom coffee blend, Ashwagandha is a medicinal herb that has been used for over 3000 years. Studies suggest this little wonder may help reduce stress and anxiety and potentially boost brain function.

What is cacao?

You’ve probably heard of cacao before given that it's the key ingredient in chocolate! We decided to include it in our healthy coffees as it is rich in antioxidants called flavanols. It is also thought to reduce inflammation.

The Chaga mushroom coffee blend

Like Ashwagandha, Chaga mushrooms have been used as a traditional medicine for many years. Another warrior against free radicals, preliminary studies on human cells have suggested that Chaga may help tackle aging of the skin and may also help to lower cholesterol.

The MCT coconut coffee

I think we can agree that coconut coffee, even without any additional benefits, sounds pretty tasty. Our coconut ‘fuel’ blend aims to do a bit more than tickle your taste buds. Coconut oil contains fatty acids called MCTs which when absorbed by your body, may boost your metabolism and increase the number of calories you burn when exercising. If you’re looking for more of a brain boost, the MCTs in coconut oil can also act as energy sources for your brain.
