What is CBD Coffee?

By infusing coffee beans or brewing coffee to include cannabidiol (CBD, the non-psychoactive compound found in hemp plants) we can create a whole new set of effects, making CBD coffee an intriguing option for the health-conscious coffee lover.

Don’t worry - it won't won't get you all high and floaty, and you can still operate heavy machinery or manage the grill at the family BBQ. Emerging research suggests it may offer some surprising benefits. In a nutshell, regular coffee provides that caffeine jolt and CBD coffee takes things a step further as when combined, this pair can make you feel fantastic. Here’s how.

It can have a positive effect on happiness by assisting your brain's chemical receptors in responding to the serotonin that's already in your system. In a sense opening the doors to elevated mood.

CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, which influences stress management in our body. CBD's effects mirror natural endocannabinoids, potentially promoting emotional well-being, cognitive function, and sleep quality.

Coffee and CBD are both rich in antioxidants, molecules that combat free radicals, known to damage cells. Antioxidants in coffee, such as chlorogenic and caffeic acids, have been documented. Similarly, research has identified antioxidant properties also within CBD. Research suggests CBD possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Techniques for Making CBD Coffee

There are two main ways to incorporate CBD into your coffee:

  1. Pre-infused Coffee Beans: Of the two, this is the simplest way to consume CBD coffee. These beans are combined with CBD oil during the roasting process. Simply brew them like you would your regular coffee beans and sup away. While this does make life easier, you cannot control the ratio of CBD and coffee.
  1. Adding CBD Oil to Coffee: For more control over your dosage, you can add CBD oil directly to your brewed coffee since you are in charge of the dropper, you can administer the correct amount for your needs. Be sure to choose a high-quality, broad-spectrum variety. Here are a couple of things to remember:

CBD is fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves more readily in fatty substances. So this is great if you use milk or plant milk, as the CBD will absorb better and therefore increase the bioavailability, and could lead to more pronounced effects from the CBD. If you take your coffee black it will still work to a similar level, just stir the coffee well. Be mindful to heat your liquids gently to avoid degrading the beneficial compounds.

How Much CBD Should I Use?

The smart move is to begin with a low dose of CBD oil in your coffee, around 5 milligrams. The effect will vary depending on the strength of your CBD oil and also your physical size etc. Over time, you can gradually increase the amount based on your desired effects and experience. Like all things with variables, It's important to feel your way into it. Try not to rush. It’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional before consuming CBD, especially if you take any medications.

What Do These Coffee Beans Taste Like?

High-quality CBD coffee beans should taste just like regular coffee. The CBD oil itself typically has a mild, earthy flavour that should not significantly alter the taste of the coffee. The flavour of the coffee will be more prominent on the pallet. Similarly, for the amount of oil you would drop into a cup yourself (typically 1-2 drops) again, this should not compromise the overall coffee flavour.
